Horace Mewborn, Vietnam veteran and Mosby scholar, passes away

Horace Mewborn well respected and widely known Mosby scholar passed away December 14, 2019 in New Bern, North Carolina.

He was born May 7, 1941 in North Carolina. After graduating from Campbell College, he served seven years in the U.S. Army (Special Forces), with two-and-a-half years in Vietnam, where he reached the rank of captain.

After leaving the army, he graduated from East Carolina University and entered the FBI, where he spent 20 years. Among his assignments with the FBI were tours of duty in New York City, and the FBI headquarters, located in Washington D.C.

He co-authored the book Mosby’s Command, 43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, for the H.E. Howard Virginia Regimental Series.

Horace also compiled and edited the book, From Mosby’s Command: Newspaper Letters & Articles by and about John S. Mosby and his Rangers, and wrote three feature articles for Blue & Gray magazine on Mosby’s Rangers.

Horace led numerous tours of “Mosby’s Confederacy” and other Civil War battlefield tours. In addition, Horace lectured all around the country on the partisan leader and was considered an authority by all.
